README

An Exponential extension that lets an administrator see and manage the notification settings of other users: which items they are subscribed to, and how they receive the notification digest. You can remove a user's subscriptions or change their digest settings without signing in as that user.

It is useful when a user receives mail they no longer want and cannot change it themselves, when you clean up subscriptions of users who left, or when support staff need to see why somebody gets (or does not get) notification mail.

  • Admin tab: Users notifications (drawn with a bell icon in the admin4 design)
  • Module: notificationcontrol with the views list and view
  • License: GNU General Public License v2.0

Contents

Requirements

  • Exponential 6.x (the legacy kernel) on PHP 8.0 or later
  • The ezjscore extension, which ships with Exponential and is active by default (the user page loads its selection script through ezscript_require)
  • The kernel notification system: item notifications (ezsubtree) and, when enabled, the digest handler (ezgeneraldigest)

Installation

With Composer

From the root of your Exponential installation:

composer require se7enxweb/novennotification

The Exponential legacy installer places the extension in extension/novennotification. The package replaces the older eab/novennotification, so remove that one if you had it.

By hand

  1. Download the release archive from https://github.com/se7enxweb/novennotification/releases, or clone it:

    git clone https://github.com/se7enxweb/novennotification.git extension/novennotification

    The directory must be called extension/novennotification.

  2. Activate the extension in settings/override/site.ini.append.php:

    [ExtensionSettings]
    ActiveExtensions[]=novennotification

After either way

Regenerate the autoload array and clear the caches:

php bin/php/ezpgenerateautoloads.php -e
php bin/php/ezcache.php --clear-all

Then reload the administration interface. A Users notifications tab appears in the top menu.

Configuration

The extension reads one settings file, novennotification.ini. Do not edit the copy in extension/novennotification/settings/; put your own values in settings/override/novennotification.ini.append.php instead:

<?php /* #?ini charset="utf-8"?

[GroupSettings]
# The user groups (node IDs) offered in the group selector. The first one is
# shown when the page opens. 12 and 13 are the default "Members" and
# "Administrator users" groups of a new installation.
UserGroupNodeIDs[]
UserGroupNodeIDs[]=12
UserGroupNodeIDs[]=13
UserGroupNodeIDs[]=42

# How many users the list shows per page.
Limit=50

*/ ?>
Setting Section Default What it does
UserGroupNodeIDs[] [GroupSettings] 12, 13 Node IDs of the user groups in the selector; the first is the default group
Limit [GroupSettings] 50 Number of users per page in the list

To find the node ID of a user group, open the group in the administration interface and look at the node ID in its details (or in the URL content/view/full/<node ID>).

The extension also adds these settings for you (no action needed):

  • menu.ini: the Users notifications top tab with Icon=bell, and a "Users notifications" link in the left menu of the User accounts tab
  • module.ini: the notificationcontrol module
  • design.ini: the extension's design and its novennotification.css stylesheet for the administration
  • site.ini: the extension's translations (French is included), and [ContentSettings] TranslationList=fre-FR. If your site does not use French, override that value in your own site.ini.append.php.

Usage

  1. Click the Users notifications tab, or the "Users notifications" link in the left menu of the User accounts tab. This opens notificationcontrol/list.
  2. Pick a user group in the selector. The left menu also lists every user group directly below the Users top node, for a quick jump.
  3. The list shows each user's name, login and email address, sorted by name, with page links at the bottom. A subgroup is shown as a link that opens that group.
  4. Click the icon at the end of a user's row to open notificationcontrol/view/(user)/<user object ID>. That page shows:
    • the user's digest settings, when the digest handler is enabled: whether they receive a digest, and daily, weekly (with the weekday) or monthly (with the day of the month), at which hour. Change them and click Apply changes.
    • the user's item notifications: every node they are subscribed to, with its class and section. Tick the ones to remove (the toggle button at the top of the column inverts the selection) and click Remove selected.

URLs

URL What it shows
notificationcontrol/list The users of the first configured group
notificationcontrol/list/(group)/13 The users of the group with node ID 13
notificationcontrol/list/(group)/13/(offset)/50 The second page when Limit=50
notificationcontrol/view/(user)/14 The notification settings of the user whose object ID is 14

The views work in any siteaccess where the module is allowed. The extension ships templates for both the admin design and the standard design, so you can also offer the pages on a front-end siteaccess for trusted editors.

Permissions

The notificationcontrol module defines no separate functions. To let a role use it, add a policy for the module notificationcontrol with all functions (Roles and policies, edit the role, New policy). Users with full access (*/*), such as administrators, can use it already.

Give this policy only to people who may change other users' subscriptions: the pages show every listed user's login and email address and let the viewer remove their subscriptions.

Upgrading

  • From eab/novennotification 0.9.x with Composer: remove the old package and require se7enxweb/novennotification. The settings and the module did not change, so your novennotification.ini override keeps working.
  • From a copy in extension/: replace the directory, then regenerate the autoloads and clear the caches (see Installation).

Known limits

  • The left menu of the extension's pages lists the user groups directly below node 5 (the Users top node of a default installation). Groups elsewhere are reachable only through the selector, so list them in UserGroupNodeIDs[].
  • The user page shows at most 500 item notifications per user.
  • The digest settings are shown only when the ezgeneraldigest notification handler is available.
  • Translations: French only; other languages show the English texts.

Troubleshooting

  • No tab appears: check that the extension is in ActiveExtensions[], then clear the caches (php bin/php/ezcache.php --clear-all). The tab is not shown in browse mode and is disabled while you edit content; that is intended.
  • "Access denied": the user's role needs the notificationcontrol policy described under Permissions.
  • The list is empty: the selected group has no users directly below it, or UserGroupNodeIDs[] names a node that is not a user group. Check the node IDs.
  • The tab shows no icon: the icon is drawn by the admin4 design only; other admin designs show the tab's name without it.

Credits and history

  • 2009: written by Jean-Luc Nguyen at Noven for eZ Publish 4 and published on projects.ez.no.
  • 2012 - 2016: maintained by Andy Caiger (EAB), who added editing of a user's digest settings and the Composer package eab/novennotification.
  • Since 2026: maintained by 7x for Exponential as se7enxweb/novennotification.

eZ Publish, the system this extension was first written for, was developed by eZ Systems and was discontinued by its creator after about 18 years; Exponential continues its legacy kernel.

The original notes from 2009 are kept in doc/readme.
